Artists look at the world to find shapes and lines. Nature has many patterns. A pattern is a design that repeats over and over. We can also find patterns in things made by people, like a brick wall.
Symmetry is when two sides of a shape match each other. Imagine folding a shape in half. If both sides line up perfectly, it has symmetry. The fold line is called the line of symmetry.
We can use emphasis to make one part of our art stand out. This is called a focal point. A bright color or a big shape can create emphasis. It grabs your eye right away.

Let us look at a ladybug. We want to find its elements of art, patterns, and symmetry.
Step 1: Look at the shape. The ladybug has a round body. This is a form like a dome.
Step 2: Look at the colors. It has a bright red shell with black spots. The red color stands out.
Step 3: Look for a pattern. The black spots repeat on both sides of its back.
Step 4: Look for symmetry. Draw an imaginary line down the middle. The left side has the same spots as the right side. They match perfectly!
