When we look at art, we use special words. Space is an element of art. It shows how deep a drawing looks. We can make flat paper look like a real, 3D world!
To show space, we use lines and value. Value is how light or dark a color is. Objects that are far away look smaller. They also have lighter values and softer contrast.
We also use repetition. Drawing the same shape over and over makes a pattern. If we repeat trees and make them smaller, our eyes feel movement. The design flows toward the back!
✏️ Worked example
Let us analyze a drawing of a street. How do we use art terms to explain why the street looks like it goes deep into the page?
First, find the lines of the street. They start wide at the bottom and meet at a single point in the middle.
Next, look at the light and dark parts. This is value. The buildings close to us have dark shadows. The buildings far away are very light.
Then, look at the shapes. The windows are big near the bottom. They repeat and get smaller as they go back. This repetition creates rhythm.
Last, look at contrast. The strong contrast of colors in the front pulls your eyes there first. This creates emphasis on the foreground.
