Mixing media

Grade 4 · Art · Free lesson

Hi there! Today we will explore how to mix different art tools to create amazing artwork.

Have you ever used crayons and paint together? When you use more than one material in an artwork, it is called mixed media.

paint

You can combine soft paper, hard cardboard, and paint. This helps you build a cool sculpture. Mixing different materials gives your art unique textures.

Building a Mixed Media Sculpture

Water and oil do not mix. If you draw with wax crayons first, watercolor paint will slide right off the wax. This creates a neat secret message effect!

Crayon Resist with Paint
✏️ Worked example

Let's plan a mixed media artwork of a sunny garden step-by-step. We want to show thick textures and bright colors.

  1. First, analyze your materials. We have watercolor paint, crayons, and green yarn.
  2. Next, draw a yellow sun and flower petals with your wax crayons. Press down hard so the wax is thick.
  3. Then, paint blue watercolor over the sky. Watch how the paint rolls off the wax sun!
  4. Finally, glue the green yarn onto the paper to make fuzzy flower stems. Now you have a beautiful mixed media garden!
