Color wheel

Grade 5 · Art · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your art guide. Today, we will discover how colors work together to create beautiful art!

Look around you. You can find elements of art like color, line, and shape in nature and in things made by people. A color wheel is a special tool that organizes these colors in a circle.

The color wheel starts with three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. These colors are the building blocks. You cannot make them by mixing other colors together.

Red Yellow Blue

When you mix two primary colors together, you create secondary colors. Mixing red and yellow makes orange. Yellow and blue make green, and blue and red make purple.

Red + Yellow = Orange

Artists use these colors to create emphasis and balance. For example, placing opposite colors like blue and orange next to each other makes them both stand out.

✏️ Worked example

Let us analyze a colorful painting of a sunset over the blue ocean. Walk through how to identify the elements of art and principles of design.

  1. First, look for elements of art. Identify the lines where the water meets the sky, and the shapes of the round sun.
  2. Next, identify the colors. Spot the warm orange and red in the sky, and the cool blue in the ocean.
  3. Then, look for principles of design. Notice the emphasis. The bright yellow sun stands out because it is the brightest spot.
  4. Finally, check for balance and repetition. The repeating blue waves create a pattern that guides your eyes across the artwork.
