Artists use space and form to make flat paper look like a deep, real world. We do this using perspective. One-point perspective uses a single point where lines meet.
The horizon line is where the sky meets the ground. On this line, we place the vanishing point. All parallel lines that go away from us slide toward this single dot.
We use contrast and proportion to show distance. Things look large and bright when they are close to us. Things look small and dull as they get closer to the vanishing point.
Let us analyze how an artist uses art elements and design principles to draw a realistic 3D brick road. We need to explain how line, proportion, and space work together.
- First, find the element of line. Draw a flat horizontal line across your page to create your horizon line.
- Next, choose your space. Put a single dot in the middle of that line to act as your vanishing point.
- Now, use proportion. Draw two diagonal lines from the bottom corners of your paper meeting at the dot. This creates a road that starts wide and gets narrow.
- Add repetition and pattern. Draw horizontal lines across the road to make bricks. Make the spaces between the lines very wide at the bottom, but very tight and close together near the dot.
- Finally, evaluate the contrast. Color the bricks at the bottom with bright, dark colors. Color the bricks near the dot with light, soft colors to complete the 3D illusion.
