Artists use different tools and ideas depending on when they lived. Historical artists lived long ago, while contemporary artists are alive and working today.
Let us look at how different cultures paint nature. A historical artist from Europe might use oil paints on canvas, while an artist from East Asia might use ink on paper.
When we compare art, we look for what is the same. When we contrast art, we look for what is different.
✏️ Worked example
Let us compare and contrast a historical self-portrait by a male artist with a contemporary self-portrait by a female artist.
Step 1: Look at the historical painting. It was made with oil paint by Rembrandt in Europe during the 1600s. It uses dark, realistic colors.
Step 2: Look at the contemporary painting. It was made with bright digital tools by a female artist in Japan today. It uses glowing, bright neon colors.
Step 3: Find what is the same. Both artworks are self-portraits. They both show the face of the artist looking at us.
Step 4: Find what is different. One uses old oil paint, while the other uses modern computer screens. One uses dark colors, while the other uses bright neon.
