Did you know you can use more than one art material on a single artwork? This is called mixed media. You can mix paint, crayons, paper, and even clay to make your art stand out.
When we mix media, we think about how different materials work together. For example, wax crayons resist water-based paint. If you draw with a crayon first, the wet watercolor paint will slide right off the wax!
We can also mix 2D materials like drawing and 3D materials like fiber or clay. This adds real texture that you can feel. It makes your flat paper artwork pop out into the real world!
Let us plan a mixed media artwork step-by-step. We want to show a shiny fish swimming in a deep, textured blue ocean.
- First, we choose our base. We use a thick piece of white paper because we want to use wet paint.
- Next, we draw a fish using bright oil pastels. We press down hard so the wax layer is nice and thick.
- Then, we brush dark blue watercolor paint over the whole paper. The paint sticks to the paper but runs off the oily fish!
- Finally, we glue real shiny sequins onto the fish. This adds a cool, bumpy texture that catches the light.
