Hi there! Today we will explore how art has changed over time and across different cultures.

Art history is the study of artworks from the past to the present. Artists from different times and places use unique styles to share their stories.

We can compare old art with new art. Long ago, artists used natural paints on flat surfaces. Today, artists might use bright digital tools or 3D shapes.

Past Art Modern Art

Art connects people across different cultures. By looking at symbols and colors, we learn what was important to people in different eras.

✏️ Worked example

Compare a traditional Japanese woodblock print from 1830 with a modern Japanese digital painting from 2020. How are they similar and different?

  1. Look at the materials. The 1830 print uses ink on paper. The 2020 painting uses pixels on a screen.
  2. Identify the subjects. Both artworks show beautiful local mountains and nature scenes.
  3. Compare the lines. The old print has bold, hand-carved outlines. The new digital art has smooth, computer-made lines.
  4. Find the cultural connection. Both artists use soft blue and green colors to show a deep respect for nature.
