When you look down a long road, the sides seem to meet at a single point in the distance. In art, we call this the vanishing point. This simple trick helps us show space, which is the area around and between objects.
We use different elements of art to create depth. For example, we use straight lines that point to our vanishing point. We also use value, which is the lightness or darkness of a color, to show how light hits our 3D shapes.
To make our art feel balanced and unified, we also use principles of design. Contrast helps make our shapes pop out. By placing dark values next to light values, we create a strong focal point that grabs the viewer's eye.
Let's analyze how to draw a basic 3D block using one-point perspective. We will use the elements of line, value, and form to make it look real.
- First, draw a straight horizontal line across your paper. This is your horizon line.
- Next, make a single dot on that line. This is your vanishing point where all lines will go.
- Draw a flat square below your horizon line. This represents the front shape of your block.
- Use a ruler to draw light lines from the top corners of your square straight to the vanishing point.
- Draw a horizontal line to slice off the back of your block, creating a new 3D form.
- Finally, shade one side darker than the other. This uses value to make the form look solid and deep.
