Let us look at nature. Long ago, Japanese artists made woodblock prints of powerful ocean waves. Today, modern artists use bright colors to show how they feel about the sea.
When we compare artworks, we look for things that are the same and things that are different. We look at the colors, the materials used, and the main message of each piece.
Compare a historical Japanese print of a wave (from 1831) to a modern American painting of a bright blue ocean wave (from 2020). Find one similarity and one difference.
- Step 1: Look at the historical Japanese print. It uses simple ink lines and soft colors on paper. It shows the power of nature.
- Step 2: Look at the modern American painting. It uses thick, bright oil paint on a large canvas. It also shows a big wave.
- Step 3: Find a similarity. Both artists chose a giant ocean wave as their main subject to show nature's power.
- Step 4: Find a difference. The historical artist used ink on paper, while the modern artist used bright oil paint on canvas.
