Mixed media means using more than one material to make a single piece of art. You can combine drawing, painting, paper collage, and even digital art to tell a unique story.
When you mix media, you must think about how materials react. For example, water-based paint will slide right off of waxy crayons. Artists use this trick, called crayon resist, to make cool patterns.
You can also build 3D forms using clay, fiber art, or cardboard. Adding these sculpted shapes to a flat canvas creates a rich, textured surface that people want to touch.
Let us plan a mixed media project. We want to show a rainy day in a city. We have crayons, watercolors, and newspaper. How do we combine them step-by-step to make a neat artwork?
- First, analyze your materials. The newspaper has text. The crayons are waxy and block water. The watercolors are wet and transparent.
- Next, tear the newspaper into tall rectangle shapes. These will be our city buildings. Glue them onto your heavy drawing paper.
- Then, use a white or light blue crayon to draw diagonal rain lines across the whole page, right over the newspaper buildings.
- Now, paint blue and purple watercolor over the entire page. Notice how the paint sticks to the newspaper but rolls off the waxy crayon lines.
- Let the paint dry. You have successfully produced a mixed media piece using collage, drawing, and painting!
