Historical artists used local materials like clay or stone. Contemporary artists, who work in the modern world, often use digital tools or recycled plastics.
Compare a historical Japanese woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai (male, 1830s) with a contemporary Japanese digital painting by Chiho Aoshima (female, 2000s). How do they connect to their culture?
- Step 1: Identify the artists and their time periods. Hokusai worked in the 1800s using traditional woodblock printing. Aoshima works today using modern computer software.
- Step 2: Look for cultural connections. Both artists show a deep respect for nature, which is a major theme in Japanese culture.
- Step 3: Compare their styles. Hokusai used clean, hand-carved ink lines and paper. Aoshima uses bright, glossy digital colors and surreal, dream-like characters.
- Step 4: Contrast their tools. Hokusai used physical wood blocks and ink. Aoshima uses digital screens and pixels.
- Step 5: Form a conclusion. Both artists celebrate nature in Japanese culture, but they use the technology of their own time periods to do it.
