Historical art often shows us the traditions and beliefs of a culture from the past. For example, traditional Japanese printmakers used carved woodblocks to create beautiful, flowing landscapes that honored nature.
Contemporary artists often take those old traditions and mix them with modern life. A modern Japanese artist might use digital tools to draw bright, energetic city scenes that still use those same flowing lines.
Compare a historical woodblock print of a mountain from 1830s Japan with a contemporary digital drawing of a city street from 2020s Japan. How do they connect to their culture?
- Look at the tools: The historical artist carved wood blocks by hand, while the contemporary artist used a digital tablet.
- Look at the subject: The historical print focuses on quiet nature, showing how traditional culture valued the earth. The contemporary drawing focuses on busy technology, showing modern city life.
