A spreadsheet is a digital tool that helps us organize information in rows and columns. When we collect facts and numbers, we call it data.
We can transform our data into a colorful chart to see trends. A trend is a pattern that shows us if numbers are going up, going down, or staying the same.
Once we spot a trend, we can make an inference. An inference is an educated guess based on the clues in our data.
✏️ Worked example
Leo tracked how many library books his classmates read each week. In Week 1, they read 10 books. In Week 2, they read 20 books. In Week 3, they read 30 books. Let's use our thinking skills to find the trend and make an inference.
First, we enter the numbers into a digital spreadsheet with two columns: Week and Books.
Next, we use the spreadsheet tool to transform this data into a line chart.
Then, we look at the chart and analyze the trend. The line goes straight up!
Finally, we make an inference. Since the number goes up each week, we can guess that classmates will read even more books in Week 4.
