Spreadsheets & data

Grade 5 · Coding · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let's learn how to use spreadsheets to find cool patterns in data!

A spreadsheet is a digital tool that helps us organize information. We put numbers or words into boxes called cells, which are set up in rows and columns.

We can transform our data by sorting it from smallest to largest. This makes it easy to spot trends, which are patterns that show how things change over time.

Sorting Reveals Trends! Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

Once we see a trend, we can make an inference. An inference is a smart guess based on the facts we already know.

Facts + Clues = Inference!
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you track the number of plastic water bottles your class recycles each day for four days. The numbers are: Monday (5), Tuesday (12), Wednesday (19), and Thursday (26). Let's use our thinking skills to transform this data, find a trend, and make an inference.

  1. 1. Enter the days and numbers into two columns in your digital spreadsheet.
  2. 2. Transform the data by sorting the bottle numbers from smallest to largest: 5, 12, 19, 26.
  3. 3. Look for a trend. The numbers are going up by exactly 7 bottles every single day.
  4. 4. Make an inference! Since recycling goes up by 7 each day, we can infer that Friday's count will likely be 33 bottles.
