Other information is unsafe to share. This is called identifying information. It includes your real name, your school, your phone number, and your home address. Sharing these details can let strangers know exactly who and where you are.
Let us practice checking if a post is safe. Imagine your classmate, Sam, wants to post this message on a public school game board: 'My name is Sam Miller, I go to Oak Creek Middle School, and I love playing soccer! Add me!' Explain if this post is safe, and show how Sam can fix it.
- Find the safe information in the post. Sam shares that they love playing soccer. This is a hobby, which is safe to share.
- Find the unsafe information. Sam shares their full name (Sam Miller) and the name of their school (Oak Creek Middle School). This is identifying information.
- Explain the risk. Sharing a full name and school lets strangers online identify and locate Sam in the real world.
- Make the post safe. Remove the real name and school. Sam can use a fun nickname instead.
- Rewrite the safe version: 'I love playing soccer! Add my gamer tag: SoccerStar12!' Now it is safe and ready to share!
