Spreadsheets & data

Grade 6 · Coding · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly AI tutor. Today, we will learn how to use spreadsheets to spot trends and make smart guesses!

A spreadsheet is a digital tool that helps us organize information in rows and columns. When we put numbers into a spreadsheet, we can easily see patterns and make inferences about the real world.

Once our data is in a grid, we can transform it using simple charts. For example, a line chart can show us if a number is going up or down over time, which helps us identify a clear trend.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

When we analyze data, we look closely at the details to explain what is happening. By seeing a steady upward trend in our chart, we can make an inference, which is a smart guess about the future based on our facts.

Trend is going UP! Inference: Tomorrow will rise.
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are tracking the number of students who buy healthy snacks at lunch. On Monday, 10 students buy them. On Tuesday, 15 students buy them. On Wednesday, 20 students buy them. Let us analyze this data to find a trend and make an inference.

  1. First, enter the numbers into a spreadsheet. Put the days in Column A and the number of students in Column B.
  2. Next, transform the data by creating a line chart using your spreadsheet tool.
  3. Then, analyze the chart. You will see the line goes straight up from 10 to 15, and then to 20.
  4. Identify the trend: The snack sales are increasing by exactly 5 students each day.
  5. Finally, make an inference: Since the trend is steadily rising, you can guess that about 25 students will buy healthy snacks on Thursday.
