Game design & development

Grade 7 · Coding · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to start your journey as a game designer? Let's explore how we turn big ideas into playable games!

Every great game starts with a design process. This is a step-by-step path where you plan, build, and test your game ideas.

When making a game, you will face bugs and challenges. Game designers use courage and confidence to try new ideas, even when their first try does not work.

Try IdeaSuccess!

Setting clear goals helps you stay on track. If your code breaks, you can resolve the challenge independently by breaking the big goal into smaller, easier steps.

1. Sketch the character2. Code the jump movement3. Test and play!
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are coding a jumping mechanic for your hero character, but the hero keeps falling through the floor! Show how you can use the design process and your personal character traits to solve this problem independently.

  1. Set a clear goal: You want the hero to stop falling and land safely on the green floor block.
  2. Show courage: Instead of getting upset or giving up, stay calm and remind yourself that bugs are just puzzles waiting to be solved.
  3. Investigate the problem: Look closely at your code blocks to see if the 'gravity' or 'collision' settings are turned off.
  4. Test a solution: Change the collision setting to 'solid' on your floor block.
  5. Build confidence: Run the game to test your work. Celebrate when your hero lands safely on top of the floor!
