When you code or play games online, you use accounts. To keep your account safe, you must use a strong password, never share your login details with friends, and always log off when you are done.
Sharing online can be fun, but we must group information into 'safe' and 'unsafe' buckets. Safe information includes your favorite hobbies, food, or colors. These do not reveal who you are or where you live.
Unsafe information is private data that can identify you. This includes your full name, phone number, home address, or school name. Keep this private to protect your real-world identity.
Alex is creating a profile on a new coding website. Let's help Alex decide what to do with these four pieces of information: a secret password, a favorite sport, a home phone number, and finishing the session on a shared school computer.
- First, analyze the password. A password is the key to your account. Alex must keep this completely secret and never share it with anyone.
- Next, look at the favorite sport (soccer). Sharing that you like soccer is safe because it is a general hobby. It does not identify who Alex is or where Alex lives.
- Then, evaluate the home phone number. This is identifying information. It is unsafe to share because people could use it to contact Alex directly.
- Finally, consider the shared computer. To keep the account safe, Alex must log off the website and log out of the device completely before leaving.
