Spreadsheets & data

Grade 7 · Coding · Free lesson

Hi there! Today we will learn how to use digital spreadsheets to find cool patterns and make smart guesses from data.

A spreadsheet is a digital tool made of rows and columns. We use it to organize numbers so we can easily spot trends and make inferences.

When we look at data over time, we can see if numbers are going up, going down, or staying the same. This path is called a trend.

Jan Apr Upward Trend

Once you find a trend, you can make an inference. An inference is a smart guess based on the facts you already see.

Data Trend: Upward Inference: Keep buying!
✏️ Worked example

Imagine you run a school snack shop. You put your weekly apple sales into a spreadsheet. Week 1: 10 apples, Week 2: 20 apples, Week 3: 30 apples. Walk through how to transform this data to find the trend and make an inference.

  1. First, enter your numbers into two columns: 'Week' and 'Apples Sold'.
  2. Next, highlight your data and create a line graph using your spreadsheet tool.
  3. Analyze the graph. Notice that the line goes straight up from left to right.
  4. Identify the trend. Since the numbers are increasing each week, you have an upward trend.
  5. Make an inference. You can guess that Week 4 will have even higher sales, so you should order more apples!
