A trend is a general direction in which something is changing. By plotting data points on a line graph, we can easily see if numbers are going up, going down, or staying the same over time.

Once we spot a trend, we can make an inference. An inference is an educated guess based on the evidence we see, helping us predict what might happen next or explain why the pattern exists.

Let's analyze a real-world dataset. Imagine you track the number of daily visitors to a local park over one week: Monday (10), Tuesday (12), Wednesday (15), Thursday (14), Friday (45), Saturday (80), and Sunday (75). Let's transform this data to find a trend and make an inference.

  1. Step 1: Organize the data. Put the days of the week on the bottom x-axis and the number of visitors on the vertical y-axis.
  2. Step 2: Plot the points. Use a digital spreadsheet tool to draw a line connecting the daily visitor counts.
  3. Step 3: Analyze the pattern. Notice that the line stays low and flat from Monday to Thursday, but spikes sharply upward on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  4. Step 4: Identify the trend. There is a strong upward trend in park visitors specifically during the weekend days.
  5. Step 5: Make an inference. We can infer that people have more free time for outdoor activities on weekends because they are off from school or work.
