To make a strong inference, you must always support your ideas with direct evidence from the passage. If you cannot find a specific word, phrase, or sentence to back up your claim, your inference might just be a wild guess.
Read this short passage and infer the character's feelings: "Elena stared at the blank screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She took a deep breath, deleted her opening paragraph for the fifth time, and sighed as she looked at the clock showing 2:00 AM."
- Establish your purpose: We are reading specifically to find clues about Elena's emotional state.
- Identify the text evidence: She 'deleted her opening paragraph for the fifth time' and 'sighed' at '2:00 AM'.
- Connect to background knowledge: When people repeat tasks late at night and sigh, they are usually tired and frustrated.
- Synthesize and infer: Elena is feeling frustrated, exhausted, and stuck with her writing project.
