When you read, ask yourself: What is the main message? Look at how the text is built to help you find the answer.
Read this short paragraph: "First, get a clean bowl. Next, scoop some soil into it. Last, gently press your flower seed into the dirt." Let us explain the author's purpose and how the structure helps us understand it.
- Look at the transition words. The text uses 'First', 'Next', and 'Last'.
- Identify the structure. Since it uses time order words, this is a sequence structure.
- Think about why the author wrote this. They want to teach us how to plant a seed.
- Explain the purpose. The purpose is to instruct the reader on planting a seed.
- Connect the structure to the purpose. The step-by-step structure makes the instructions easy to follow.
