Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will learn how to find how things are alike and different in a story!
When we read, we look for how things are the same. This is called comparing. We also look for how they are different. This is called contrasting.
We can use a Venn diagram to show this. Alike things go in the middle. Different things go on the sides.
Finding these details helps us understand the story better. We can write a great response to show what we learned.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story: 'Tim and Jan both love pets. Tim has a big, loud dog. Jan has a small, quiet cat.' Now, let us write a response that compares and contrasts their pets.
Find how the pets are alike. The text says they both love pets. They both have a pet.
Find how the pets are different. Tim has a big, loud dog. Jan has a small, quiet cat.
Write your response. Start by saying how they are alike: 'Tim and Jan both own pets.'
Next, write how they are different: 'Tim's dog is big and loud, but Jan's cat is small and quiet.'
