When you see a new word, do not worry. You can read it by looking at each letter. We call this sounding out a word.
First, say each single sound in the word from left to right. Keep your sounds smooth and clear.
Next, blend the sounds together. Run the sounds into each other without stopping to read the whole word.
✏️ Worked example
Let us practice decoding the word 'flat' step by step.
- Look at the first letter, f. It makes the /f/ sound.
- Look at the second letter, l. It makes the /l/ sound.
- Put the first two sounds together to make /fl/.
- Look at the next letter, a. It makes the short /a/ sound. Add it to make /fla/.
- Look at the last letter, t. It makes the /t/ sound. Blend them all to say 'flat'!
