Hello! I am Studyfin. Today we will learn how to guess what happens next in a story!
When we read, we can guess what will happen next. This is called making a prediction. We use clues from the story to help us.
Look at the book's cover and pictures. These are text features. They give us big clues about the story before we even start reading.
We also look at the genre. If a story is a scary mystery, we can predict a spooky puzzle will need to be solved.
As you read, you might find new clues. It is okay to change your prediction! That is what good readers do.
Let us practice! Read this short story: 'The sky turned very dark. Strong winds started to blow. Maya ran outside to help her dad bring the patio cushions inside.' Predict what will happen next.
- Find the clues in the text. The clues are 'dark sky', 'strong winds', and 'bringing cushions inside'.
- Think about what these clues mean. Dark skies and strong winds usually happen before a big storm.
- Make your prediction. Based on the clues, it is going to rain very soon.
- Confirm your prediction. If the next line of the story says 'Raindrops started to fall,' then your prediction was correct!
