Books are split into two big groups. Fiction is a made-up story from an author's mind. Nonfiction is full of real facts about our world.
Fiction books have special parts. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end. They also have characters, a setting, and a problem to solve.
Nonfiction books look very different. They use facts to teach us. They have text features like bold words, maps, photos, and a glossary.
Let's look at two book covers. Book A is called 'The Talking Frog's Big Adventure.' It has drawings of a frog in a suit. Book B is called 'All About Frogs.' It has real photos and a map of where frogs live. Which one is nonfiction, and how do we know?
- First, look at the titles. 'The Talking Frog' sounds like a made-up story. Frogs cannot really talk!
- Next, look at Book B. The title 'All About Frogs' tells us it wants to teach us real facts.
- Then, look at the art. Book A has a drawing of a frog in clothes. That is a fantasy character.
- Book B has real photos and a map. Maps are text features that show real places.
- Now, compare them. Book A is fiction because it is a made-up story with talking animals. Book B is nonfiction because it uses real photos and maps to teach facts.
