Writers use special words called figurative language. These words do not mean exactly what they say. Instead, they help us see, hear, and feel the story.
A simile is a cool tool. It compares two things using the words 'like' or 'as'. For example, you can say a runner is 'as fast as a cheetah'.
Imagery is another great tool. It uses words that tap into your five senses. It helps you see colors, hear sounds, or feel textures in your mind.
✏️ Worked example
Let us look at this sentence: 'The lake was as smooth as glass.' How does this use figurative language?
Find the two things being compared. Here, we see 'lake' and 'glass'.
Look for clue words. We see the word 'as' used twice.
Since it uses 'as' to compare, we know this is a simile.
Think about glass. Glass is very flat, clear, and still.
Now we know the lake is very calm, still, and has no waves.
