An inference is a smart guess. You make an inference when you read. You use clues from the story.
To infer, you connect book clues to what you already know. Think of it like a math problem: Book Clues + My Brain = Inference!
We must prove our guess with real evidence. Evidence means the words or facts in the story that show we are right.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story: "Ben put on his yellow raincoat. He grabbed his big black umbrella. Then, he opened the front door and stepped outside."
What is the weather like outside? How do you know?
Find the clues in the text. The clues are "raincoat" and "umbrella."
Think about what you already know. Raincoats and umbrellas are used when water falls from the sky.
Put the clues and your knowledge together.
Make your inference. The weather is rainy!
State your evidence. We know it is rainy because Ben put on a raincoat and grabbed an umbrella.
