Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore the magic of poetry!

Poetry is a special kind of writing. It uses words to paint pictures in your mind. Poems often have a beat, just like your favorite songs.

Many poems use rhyme. Rhyming words have the same ending sound, like 'cat' and 'hat'. When words rhyme, they make a nice pattern.

CAT HAT They sound the same at the end!

Poems are built with lines. A group of lines is called a stanza. Stanzas are like the paragraphs of a poem.

Stanza A stanza is a group of lines together.
✏️ Worked example

Let us look at this short poem: My dog is very sweet. He likes to eat a treat. How do we know these lines rhyme?

  1. First, find the last word of the first line. The word is 'sweet'.
  2. Next, find the last word of the second line. The word is 'treat'.
  3. Then, say both words out loud: 'sweet' and 'treat'.
  4. Listen to the ending sound. Both words end with the 'eet' sound.
  5. Since they share the same ending sound, they are rhyming words!
