Before you read, you must set a goal. This is your reading purpose. You might read to learn new facts. Or you might read just for fun.
Good readers look for clues in the story. We call these clues text evidence. We use clues to make an inference. An inference is a smart guess.
Let us practice. If a story says Max has an umbrella, what is the weather? The book does not say it is raining. But your brain knows!
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story: 'Pam put on her heavy coat. She grabbed her warm red mittens. Then she walked out the door.' What season is it? Use clues to explain.
Find your purpose. We want to find the season.
Search for clues in the text. The clues are 'heavy coat' and 'warm mittens'.
Think about what you know. You wear coats and mittens when it is cold.
Make your inference. It must be winter because Pam needs warm clothes.
