Grade 3 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hello! I am Studyfin, your friendly learning buddy. Today we will learn how to read smoothly and with great feeling!

Reading fluency means reading out loud smoothly. It is not just about reading fast. It is about reading at a nice, steady pace.

When we read, we must pay attention to punctuation. A period means we take a full stop. A comma means we take a quick breath.

Stop at the PeriodPause at the Comma

Fluency also means reading with expression. We change our voice to show feelings. We sound excited when there is an exclamation mark!

Read with Excitement!
✏️ Worked example

Let us practice reading this sentence with good fluency: "The little dog ran, but the cat sat still!"

  1. First, look at the whole sentence. Spot the comma after the word 'ran'. Spot the exclamation mark at the end.
  2. Next, read the first part: 'The little dog ran'. Keep your voice smooth.
  3. Then, pause for one quick second at the comma. Take a tiny breath.
  4. Now, read the next part: 'but the cat sat still!'.
  5. Finally, make your voice sound excited at the end because of the exclamation mark.
