Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The order of these parts is called the sequence of events. It helps us see how a story flows.
First, we meet the characters and find the problem. The problem is also called the conflict. It is what goes wrong in the story.
Next, the characters try to fix the problem. At the end, they solve it. This final fix is called the resolution.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story: 'Ben lost his dog, Max. Ben looked in the yard. He found Max hiding under a big bush. Ben hugged his dog.' Let us analyze the plot elements.
Find the start of the story. First, Ben loses his dog, Max. This is the start.
Find the conflict. The problem is that Max is lost. Ben is sad.
Find the sequence of events. Next, Ben looks in the yard.
Find the resolution. Last, Ben finds Max under a bush and hugs him. The problem is solved!
