Spelling patterns are like secret codes for words. When we learn these codes, we can spell many new words easily. Today, we will look at how adding letters to the end of a word changes its spelling.
When a short word ends with a consonant and a 'y', we have a special rule. We change the 'y' to an 'i' before we add 'es'. Let us see how the word 'fly' becomes 'flies'.
Next, let us look at words that end in a silent 'e' like 'bake'. When we add an ending that starts with a vowel, like 'ing', we drop the silent 'e'. This is called the drop-e rule!
Change the word 'try' into 'tries' by using the spelling rules you just learned.
- Look at the base word: 'try'. It ends with a consonant ('r') and the letter 'y'.
- Recall the spelling rule for words ending in 'y'. We must change the 'y' to an 'i'.
- Remove the letter 'y' to leave the root 'tr'.
- Add the letter 'i' to get 'tri'.
- Finally, add the ending 'es' to make the complete word: 'tries'!
