Summarizing

Grade 3 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin. Today we will learn how to retell a story in a short, clear way!

Summarizing means telling the main parts of a story in your own words. You keep the same meaning, but you make it much shorter.

To retell a story, we must keep the events in the right order. We use words like first, next, and last to help us.

1st Beginning 2nd Middle 3rd End

When we paraphrase, we use our own words. We do not copy the book. This shows we really understand the story!

Book Words "The tiny canine barked." Your Words "The little dog yipped." Same meaning, new words!
✏️ Worked example

Read this short story: "Sam found a lost pup in the park. He brought it home and fed it. Soon, the owner called and took the happy pup back." Let's retell and paraphrase this story in three steps!

  1. Find the beginning: Sam finds a lost puppy in the park.
  2. Find the middle: Sam takes care of the puppy at his house.
  3. Find the end: The owner gets the puppy back safely.
  4. Put it together in your own words: First, Sam found a lost pup. Next, he took care of it at home. Last, the owner took the pup back.
