Syllabication means breaking a word into smaller beats. We call these beats syllables. For example, the word 'robot' has two beats: ro-bot.
Pronunciation guides show us how to say a word out loud. They use special marks to show which letters make short or long sounds.

Let us explore the dictionary entry for the word 'splendid'. We will find its beats, how to say it, and its meaning step by step.
- First, find the word 'splendid' in the dictionary. Look at the spelling.
- Second, look for the dots or spaces. The entry shows 'splen-did'. This tells us it has two syllables.
- Third, look at the pronunciation guide in parentheses: /splen-did/. The first part is stressed.
- Fourth, read the definition. It says 'splendid' means very bright, grand, or excellent.
- Finally, we can use it in a sentence: 'The queen wore a splendid gold crown!'
