Every time an author writes, they have a special reason. This reason is called the author's purpose. It is the big 'why' behind the words.
Authors write to do three main things: Persuade, Inform, or Entertain. We can remember this with the word PIE! Each slice of the pie is a different goal.
When authors want to persuade, they try to change your mind. They use strong words to make you agree with their ideas.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short paragraph and explain the author's purpose: 'Did you know that honeybees do a special dance to show other bees where food is? It is called the waggle dance. This dance tells the hive the exact direction of the flowers.'
Look for clues in the text. The text talks about honeybees, their dances, and how they share details.
Ask yourself: Is the author trying to make me laugh or enjoy a story? No, there are no funny parts or characters.
Ask yourself: Is the author trying to get me to buy honey or save the bees? No, there are no opinions or calls to action.
Ask yourself: Is the author teaching me real facts? Yes! They are explaining how bees talk to each other.
Conclude that the author's purpose is to inform. The message is that bees use dances to share helpful facts.
