Let us find the cause and effect in this sentence: 'The heavy rain poured all afternoon, so the dirt road turned into sticky mud.'
- Step 1: Look for clue words. We see the word 'so' in the middle of the sentence.
- Step 2: Ask, 'What happened first to make something else happen?' The heavy rain poured.
- Step 3: This first event is the Cause.
- Step 4: Ask, 'What happened because of the rain?' The dirt road turned into sticky mud.
- Step 5: This result is the Effect.
