A prediction is a smart guess about what will happen next. We use clues from the story and what we already know to make our guess.
Text features help us predict. A book's title, pictures, and bold words are clues. For example, a picture of a stormy sky tells us a storm is coming.
As you read, you must check your prediction. You can confirm it if your guess was right, or correct it if the story went a different way.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short passage: 'Leo packed a big towel, sunscreen, and a toy shovel into his bag. He smiled as he put on his sun hat.' Let us predict where Leo is going, step-by-step.
Look for clues in the text. The clues are: a towel, sunscreen, a shovel, and a sun hat.
Think about what you know. Where do people use towels, sunscreen, and shovels to play in the sand?
Make your prediction. Leo is going to the beach!
Read the next sentence to check: 'Leo ran down the sandy path and jumped into the ocean waves.'
Confirm your prediction. The words 'sandy path' and 'ocean waves' prove your guess was correct!
