An inference is a smart guess. You make it by using clues from the book and things you already know.
Think of it like an equation! Clues from the text plus your own brainpower equals an inference.
When you read, look for small details. A character's actions or words are clues that show how they feel.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story: 'Leo put on his heavy yellow coat. He zipped it up to his chin. Next, he pulled on thick wool mittens and grabbed his shiny red sled.' What can we infer about the weather outside?
Find the clues in the story. The text says Leo puts on a 'heavy yellow coat' and 'thick wool mittens'.
Find another clue. The text says he grabbed his 'shiny red sled'.
Think about what you already know. You know that heavy coats, mittens, and sleds are used when it is cold and snowy.
Put the clues and your knowledge together. Coat + Mittens + Sled + Cold Weather Knowledge = Snow!
State your final inference. We can infer that it is cold and snowy outside.
