Good listeners ask smart questions. We ask questions to make sure we understand. We also ask questions to get more details about the story.
Read this short story: "Sam and his dog went to the park. Suddenly, his dog barked and ran toward the big oak tree." Let us practice active listening by finding a missing detail and asking a smart question to clarify.
- We listen to the story: Sam and his dog went to the park. The dog barked and ran to the tree.
- We check what we know: We know who (Sam and his dog) and where (the park and the tree).
- We look for what is missing: Why did the dog bark? What did the dog see at the tree?
- We ask a clear question: "What did the dog see in the big oak tree?"
