Think of the main idea like a table top. The key details are like the table legs. The legs hold up the main idea so it stands strong.
To evaluate details, ask yourself: does this fact tell me more about the main topic? If it does, it is a key detail that supports the main idea.

Read the paragraph and evaluate the details to find the main idea:
'Frogs are amazing jumpers. Their powerful back legs help them leap far. They can jump up to twenty times their own body length to escape danger.'
Read all the sentences carefully.
Look at detail 1: Frogs have powerful back legs.
Look at detail 2: They jump twenty times their body length to escape.
Evaluate: Both details talk about how well frogs can jump.
Combine the details: The main idea is that frogs are great jumpers.
