Parts of speech

Grade 4 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hello! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let's explore the magic words we use every day!

Every word in a sentence has a special job. We call these jobs parts of speech. Nouns and verbs are two main jobs.

study

A noun is a person, place, or thing. Words like 'dog', 'park', and 'teacher' are nouns. They name what we are talking about.

Noun: Dog (Thing)

A verb is an action word. It tells us what a noun is doing. Words like 'run', 'jump', and 'read' are verbs.

Verb: Spin (Action)

We must edit our writing to make sure we use nouns and verbs correctly. This helps our readers understand our ideas.

✏️ Worked example

Let's edit this draft sentence together: 'The quick frog jump into the cool pond.' How can we fix the verb?

  1. Read the sentence and find the noun doing the action. The noun is 'frog'.
  2. Find the verb that tells what the frog does. The verb is 'jump'.
  3. Check if the verb matches the noun. Since there is only one frog, we need a singular verb.
  4. Change 'jump' to 'jumps' so it fits the sentence perfectly.
  5. Write the new, correct sentence: 'The quick frog jumps into the cool pond.'
