Poetry is a special kind of writing. Poets use words, sounds, and rhythms to share feelings and ideas in a creative way.
Most poems are written in lines instead of long sentences. A group of lines in a poem is called a stanza, which is like a paragraph.
Poets also use rhythm and rhyme. Rhyme is when words end with the same sound, like 'cat' and 'hat'. This makes the poem sound like a song.
✏️ Worked example
Let us look at a short poem. Read the lines below and find which words rhyme: 'The wind began to blow, And soft fell the white snow.'
- First, look at the very last word of the first line. The last word is 'blow'.
- Next, look at the very last word of the second line. The last word is 'snow'.
- Now, listen to the ending sounds of both words. 'Blow' ends with the /oh/ sound.
- Listen to 'snow'. It also ends with the /oh/ sound.
- Since 'blow' and 'snow' end with the exact same sound, they are rhyming words!
