Every story has a narrator. The narrator is the voice that tells us what is happening.
In first-person point of view, a character in the story tells it. They use words like 'I', 'me', and 'we'.
In third-person point of view, an outside narrator tells the story. They use words like 'he', 'she', and 'they'.
✏️ Worked example
Read this short story and find the point of view:
"Leo ran to the park. He felt very excited to fly his new red kite. His sister Mia followed close behind him."
Let's figure out if this is first-person or third-person point of view!
Look closely at the pronouns used in the sentences.
Find the words that refer to the characters. We see 'He', 'His', and 'him'.
Check if the narrator uses words like 'I' or 'me' to talk about themselves. There are no 'I' or 'me' words here.
Identify the point of view. Since the narrator is outside the story looking at Leo and Mia, this is third-person point of view.
