Every great story has a shape. We call this shape the plot. The plot is the order of events in a story.
First, the story climbs up with the rising action. This is where the main problem gets bigger. The excitement grows and grows!
Next is the climax. This is the peak of the mountain! It is the most exciting part, where the main character faces the big problem.
Finally, we go down. The falling action shows things cooling down. Then, the resolution solves the problem and ends the story.
✏️ Worked example
Let us analyze the plot of "The Three Little Pigs". We will label each part step-by-step.
Find the Rising Action: The big bad wolf blows down the straw house and the stick house. The pigs run to the brick house. The danger is growing!
Find the Climax: The wolf tries to blow down the brick house. He cannot do it! So, he climbs up the roof to slide down the chimney. This is the most exciting moment.
Find the Falling Action: The wolf slips down the chimney and falls right into a hot pot of water. He screams and runs away into the woods.
Find the Resolution: The three little pigs are safe in the strong brick house. They live happily ever after.
