Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore words with matching and opposite meanings!

Synonyms are words that mean the same thing. For example, 'happy' and 'glad' are synonyms. They help make your writing more exciting!

Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. Think of 'hot' and 'cold'. They are complete opposites!

Sometimes words sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. These are called homophones! An example is 'reign' (to rule) and 'rain' (water from the sky).

✏️ Worked example

Find the synonym and the antonym for the word 'large'. Then, explain how you chose them.

  1. First, think about what 'large' means. It means something is big in size.
  2. Next, look for a word with the same meaning. 'Huge' also means big. So, 'huge' is a synonym.
  3. Then, look for a word with the opposite meaning. 'Small' means not big. So, 'small' is an antonym.
  4. Finally, check your work. 'Huge' matches 'large', and 'small' is the opposite. You did it!
