A good paragraph is like a delicious burger. It needs a top bun, a tasty filling, and a bottom bun to hold it all together.
The top bun is your topic sentence. It tells the reader the main idea of your paragraph. Every other sentence must connect to this main idea.
Inside, you add supporting details. These are sentences that explain, prove, or show your main idea with cool facts and examples.
Finally, the bottom bun is your concluding sentence. It wraps up your thoughts and reminds the reader of your big idea in a fresh way.
Let us build a focused paragraph about how dogs help people. We need a topic sentence, two supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
- First, write the topic sentence. This sets the focus: 'Dogs are amazing helpers that make our lives much easier.'
- Next, add the first supporting detail. This must stick to the topic of helping: 'For example, guide dogs help people who cannot see walk safely.'
- Then, add a second supporting detail for extra strength: 'Also, search dogs use their noses to find lost people in the woods.'
- Finally, write a concluding sentence to wrap it up: 'Clearly, dogs are valuable partners who do important work for us.'
