Authors use special signal words to show these links. Words like 'because', 'so', and 'therefore' act like signposts. They point directly to the relationship between the two events.
Read this short paragraph: 'Mia forgot to set her alarm clock last night. Therefore, she woke up late and missed the school bus.' Find the cause and the effect.
- Look for clues or signal words first. I see the word 'Therefore' in the middle of the sentences.
- Ask yourself: What happened first? Mia forgot to set her alarm clock.
- Ask yourself: What happened because of that? Mia woke up late and missed the bus.
- Match them up! The cause is 'Mia forgot her alarm'. The effect is 'Mia woke up late and missed the bus'.
