Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we will learn how to look at two different texts and find how they are alike and different!
When we read, we can compare and contrast. Comparing means finding how two things are alike. Contrasting means finding how they are different.
A Venn diagram is a great tool for this. We write things that are different on the sides. We write things that are the same in the middle where the circles overlap.
Let us practice with two short topics. Imagine Text A is about wild wolves. Text B is about friendly pet dogs. They are both canine animals, but they live in very different places!
✏️ Worked example
Compare and contrast a short story about a boy lost in a forest with a science article about forest trees.
- First, find the main topic of both texts. The story and the article both take place in or focus on a forest.
- Next, look for the purpose of each text. The story is written to entertain us with an exciting adventure. The science article is written to teach us facts about tree roots and leaves.
- Then, look for facts and details. The story mentions a dark, spooky path. The science article lists real tree names like oaks and pines.
- Now, write down how they are alike. They both help us picture what a forest looks like.
- Finally, write down how they are different. The story uses made-up events and feelings. The science article uses real details, charts, and science facts.
